At least one person was killed, and 25 others injured when activists from BNP and Awami League (AL) clashed to gain territorial influence at a remote char area in Alokbali union of Narsingdi at dawn on Thursday.
Narsingdi Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Nasim Mia told reporters that Awami League men opened fire during the clash, leaving Idon Mia, 62, dead on the spot. It was not immediately clear whether he was a BNP activist or a local.
Three of the injured are on their way to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with critical injuries.
Police and locals told reporters that Awami League grassroots activists dominated the Alokbali Union until 5 August last year, when they left the area fearing mob attacks in the wake of the ouster of central leaders from power in a mass uprising.
BNP activists filled the vacuum, but recently Awami League men began plotting to wrest back control.
To this end, Asad Ali, Awami League’s regional president at Alokbali Union, and Noab Ali, BNP’s joint convener in the same area, were embroiled in a bitter quarrel.
At dawn on Thursday, the Awami League men tried to forcibly enter one village in the union. BNP men resisted, leading to a violent clash. At one point, the Awami League goons rained bullets indiscriminately resulting in multiple casualties.
