A total of 10 Bangladeshi pilgrims have passed away in Saudi Arabia while performing Hajj this year.
The latest death was reported on May 24, when Md. Saheb Uddin, 69, from Pirganj, Rangpur, died.
Among the deceased, nine were men and one was a woman. Four of them died in Makkah, while six passed away in Madinah. The information was confirmed through the death notices published on the Hajj Management Portal of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Religious Affairs on Monday, May 26.
According to the portal, the first person to die while performing Hajj this year was Khalilur Rahman, 70, of Pansha in Rajbari on April 29. Then Fariduzzaman, 57, of Bajitpur in Kishoreganj died on May 2, Al Hamida Banu, 58, of Panchagarh Sadar died on May 5, Shahjahan Kabir, 60, of Mohammadpur in Dhaka died on May 7, and Hafez Uddin, 73, of Bakshiganj in Jamalpur died on May 9.
Apart from this, Boyez Uddin, 72, of Nilphamari Sadar died on May 10, Md. Ahidur Rahman, 72, of Sandwip, Chittagong died on May 14, Md. Joynal Hossain, 61, of Gazipur Sadar died on May 17, and Abdur Hannan Molla, 63, of Matlab, Chandpur died on May 19.
As per Saudi Arabian law, if a pilgrim dies during Hajj, his body is buried in Saudi Arabia. The body cannot be repatriated, and no objections from family members are accepted.
This year’s Hajj is scheduled to take place on June 5, subject to moon sighting. The first flight carrying Bangladeshi pilgrims departed for Saudi Arabia on April 29, and the last pre-Hajj flight is scheduled for May 31.
Bangladesh has a Hajj quota of 5,020 government-sponsored pilgrims and 81,900 private pilgrims. Return flights for the pilgrims will begin on June 10 and continue until July 10.
