To address the complications caused by the sudden imposition of additional excise duties on air travel, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) provided an exemption on unpaid duties from January 9 to 18. The organization recently announced this decision.

Excise duty is included in the price of airline tickets, which airlines collect from passengers and remit to the government. However, airlines typically start selling tickets six months in advance, while the new duty was implemented immediately. As a result, tickets purchased earlier were charged the previous duty, the new duty could not be applied to them.

To resolve this issue, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism sent a letter to the NBR, leading to the decision that no additional excise duty would be collected on tickets issued or passengers traveling between January 9 and 18.

It is worth noting that from January 9, the excise duty for domestic air travel increased from 500 to 700 Taka, for SAARC countries from 500 to 1,000 Taka, for other Asian countries from 2,000 to 2,500 Taka, for Europe and the Americas from 3,000 to 4,000 Taka.
