10 people were injured in a clash involving attacks and counter-attacks between two groups of students at Rajshahi Nursing College on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred between students of BSc in Nursing and Diploma in Nursing programs.
According to witnesses, students from both BSc and Diploma in Nursing courses were staging separate movements under different banners, raising various demands, including the appointment of qualified teachers. The confrontation reportedly erupted during a discussion regarding these demands.
According to sources, some Diploma students of Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) attended a meeting at Rajshahi Nursing College auditorium on Tuesday afternoon.
Allegations arose that they behaved inappropriately with the BSc in Nursing students which led a verbal altercation between two groups.
Following this, Diploma students of RMC reportedly went outside the college and positioned themselves at the gate.
In response, the BSc Nursing students of Rajshahi Nursing College closed the college gate and remained inside. It was alleged that the Diploma students repeatedly attempted to break down the gate. Being informed, Police arrived at the scene.
A Diploma in Nursing student, at one point, allegedly tried to snatch a mobile phone from a female BSc Nursing student. Later, the gate was then broken down amidst the police presence.
Subsequently, clashes ensued between the two groups, involving brick throwing, attacks, counter-attacks, and physical altercations, resulting in injuries to at least 10 students.
Confirming the matter, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Boalia Zone) Hafizur Rahman said that senior officials from Rajshahi Medical College Hospital visited the scene to de-escalate the tension.
Additional police have been deployed to the location, and the injured students are currently under treatment at RMC hospital, he added.
