Dinajpur police arrested 108 individuals, including 35 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League, during a special operation over the past 24 hours targeting suspects involved in various criminal cases.
A total of 108 people have been arrested in Dinajpur in the last 24 hours as part of a special operation conducted by the district police. Among the detainees are 35 individuals identified as banned Awami League leaders and activists, allegedly involved in past criminal activities and violent incidents during student protests against discrimination.
Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Md. Marufat Hossain confirmed the arrests at a press briefing held on Saturday at 4:30 PM.
According to police sources, the arrests stem from several pending cases filed during the tenure of the former ruling party, including charges related to attacks on anti-discrimination student movements.
The arrestees include key figures from various upazilas across the district. Notable among them are Saiful Islam (55), former general secretary of Mukundapur Union Awami League; Sajidur Rahman (53), current general secretary; and Zakirul Islam (52), joint secretary. From Poliprogyapur Union, Manjurul Islam (54), the general secretary, was also apprehended.
In addition, Ghioraghat Union Awami League president Anarul Islam (50) and general secretary Dilzar Rahman (53), Fulbari Upazila Awami League adviser Aziz Mondal (60), and Khairbari Union general secretary Gosht Mohon Chowdhury (52) were taken into custody.
The list also includes several city-based leaders such as Muntasir Mamun Milon (48), executive member of Dinajpur Municipal Awami League; Sakhawat Hossain alias Rafi (38), science and technology secretary; Advocate Maksedur Rahman Shahjada (46), legal affairs secretary; and Riazul Islam (54), executive member of the Dinajpur Municipality Awami League.
All arrestees were presented before the Dinajpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court by 5:30 PM on Saturday. Police stated that they are being sent to jail custody following court orders. Legal proceedings against the detainees are expected to begin shortly.
The operation reflects a renewed effort by local authorities to uphold the rule of law and address long-pending criminal cases involving politically affiliated individuals.
