Police have detained 11 activists linked to the Awami League after they staged a sudden demonstration in Dhaka’s Gulistan area, despite a nationwide ban on the party’s political activities.
A group of Awami League supporters was arrested on Sunday while conducting a flash protest in Gulistan, a busy commercial hub in central Dhaka. Law enforcement officials confirmed that 11 individuals were taken into custody, though their identities have not been released.
According to Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the detainees were apprehended for violating the ban on the party’s political mobilization. “They are being interrogated, and legal proceedings are underway. A case is being prepared against them,” he told to the media
The arrests come after a May 10 directive that placed an indefinite suspension on all political activities of the Awami League, pending judicial review. The Election Commission has also suspended the party’s registration, effectively barring it from participating in political events or upcoming elections.
Police said the detained individuals will be presented before the court on Monday. Authorities are treating the incident as a breach of the government’s current restrictions on the party, which was ousted from power amid mass protests and political turmoil earlier this year.
