After serving jail time for illegal entry, 11 Bangladeshis, including one woman, returned home from India’s Tripura state on Thursday through the Akhaura International Immigration Checkpost in Brahmanbaria.
The returnees had been detained over the past one to one and a half years in Tripura for illegal border crossing. Following the completion of legal procedures and citizenship verification by the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, they were repatriated with India’s approval.
The Bangladesh-based NGO BRAC’s Migration Programme facilitated the repatriation process, providing emergency support including food, counseling, and travel allowances. BRAC also pledged continued assistance to help the returnees reintegrate into society.
Among the 11 returnees are seven individuals from Chapainawabganj—Khobir, Ruhul, Ashraful Haque, Suman Rana, Bodirul Islam, Mannan Ali, and Ruhul Amin—alongside Farzana Ahmed Nipa from Cumilla, Helal Jamaddar from Bagerhat, and Akramul Islam Onik from Rajshahi.
Fourteen more Bangladeshis remain in Tripura awaiting repatriation, pending final verification of their citizenship, authorities confirmed.
