In a significant development, 12 individuals have been arrested in connection with the assault on police officer Yusuf Ali during a mob-related incident at a checkpoint on the Patenga Outer Ring Road in Chattogram city on February 28. The incident involved a group of people causing a disturbance and attacking the on-duty officer.
On Tuesday (March 4), a press release signed by Faisal Hasan, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs, confirmed the arrests.
The press release states that on the day of the incident (February 28), two individuals were immediately handed over to the police by the public. Prior to this, a patrol team from Patenga Police Station and local residents reached the scene, where they rescued Sub-Inspector (SI) Yusuf. Following the incident, police conducted an overnight operation on Saturday (March 1), arresting an additional 10 individuals involved in the attack. In total, 12 individuals have been apprehended.
The incident has led to a case being filed under the Speedy Trial Act at Patenga Police Station. The charges include the assault on SI Yusuf Ali, as well as the theft of a mobile phone, wallet, and walkie-talkie. The suspects have also been linked to drug use and robberies.
Liberty News’ local correspondent states that the press release further emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that all individuals involved in mob-related incidents are brought to justice.
