A total of 167 Bangladeshi migrants stranded in Libya, many of whom were victims of trafficking and abuse, have been brought back to Dhaka on a chartered flight.
On Thursday (April 10), at 5:00 AM, a special chartered flight operated by Burak Air brought back 167 irregular Bangladeshi migrants from Libya to Dhaka. The repatriation was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday.
With the assistance of the Embassy of Bangladesh in Libya and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 16 individuals from Benghazi and nearby areas, along with 151 from the Ganfouda Detention Center, were successfully repatriated.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and IOM welcomed the returnees at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Liberty News’ correspondent states that most of the returnees had entered Libya illegally, aiming to reach Europe by sea with the help of human traffickers. During their stay in Libya, many faced abduction, detention, and physical abuse.
