2 dead, 10 injured in Padma Bridge accident

Two people were killed and ten others injured after a speeding bus crashed into the back of a truck near the Mawa end of the Padma Bridge in Munshiganj late on Thursday night.

The accident took place around 11pm near pillar number 2 of the bridge, according to Fire Service and police officials.

An Imad Paribahan bus collided forcefully with a truck, severely damaging the front of the bus. A rescue team from the Sreenagar Fire Service responded quickly and rescued the victims.

The injured were taken to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, where two were declared dead on arrival, confirmed Dewan Azad, station in-charge of the local Fire Service and Civil Defence.

“After initial treatment, the injured were sent to Dhaka for better care. Several remain in critical condition,” said Dr Monira Sultana, the duty doctor at the health complex.

Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Padma Bridge (North) Police Station, said legal procedures are underway following the incident.
