At least 21 people were killed in a tragic road accident on a highway connecting Oaxaca and Puebla states in Mexico on Wednesday, according to a Reuters report.
Samuel Aguilar, the Interior Minister of Puebla state, confirmed the incident in a post on social media, stating that the crash involved three vehicles. Several others were injured and are being treated at a local hospital.
Local media outlet La Jornada reported that the crash occurred when a cement-laden truck attempted a dangerous overtake and lost control, striking an oncoming bus. The truck then collided with a passenger van before veering off the road into a ravine, where it caught fire.
Road accidents are frequent in Mexico’s remote, mountainous areas, where narrow and winding roads pose serious risks. In a similar incident in March this year, at least 11 people died when a passenger bus overturned in Oaxaca. In 2023, another bus plunged into a ravine, killing 29 people.
Authorities have launched an investigation into Wednesday’s deadly collision.
