A violent clash broke out between two factions of BNP in Comilla’s Meghna Upazila over the division of money from illegal sand extraction, leaving 25 people injured.
On Tuesday night, a confrontation erupted between the supporters of BNP’s Chhalivanga Union Youth Wing leader Rabiuallah Rabi and Assistant Vice President of BNP’s Chhalivanga Union, Barek Pradhan, over the sharing of profits from illegal sand extraction and river-based extortion. The clash occurred in the Nolchora area of Meghna Upazila, resulting in at least 20-25 people being injured, including Meghna Upazila Student Wing Joint Secretary Hasnat Pradhan. Some victims were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
The two factions, led by Rabi and Barek, had been involved in illegal sand mining and river extortion for an extended period, and tensions over profit-sharing recently led to an internal dispute. Witnesses said the two groups fought using homemade weapons, creating panic in the local area. The confrontation lasted several hours.
The full extent of the injuries remains unclear, with fears that the number of casualties may be higher. Attempts to reach Rabi and Barek for comment were unsuccessful as their phones were turned off.
Liberty News’ local correspondent states that Meghna police station’s officer-in-charge, Abdul Jalil, confirmed the incident, stating that the injured individuals are receiving treatment, and a formal investigation will be initiated if an official complaint is filed.
