Hundreds of vehicles have been caught in a massive slowdown along a 25-kilometer stretch of the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge Highway, causing significant suffering to travelers of all ages, including children.
On Friday morning (June 6), a long queue of vehicles was seen on the highway.
According to police, vehicles have been moving slowly from the Jamuna Bridge to Rabna, but there is no complete traffic jam. However, the prolonged congestion has severely disrupted normal travel.
Passengers and several bus drivers reported that the traffic buildup began late Wednesday night (June 4) due to an overwhelming number of northbound vehicles.
The situation worsened on Thursday as the entire day saw heavy congestion. Multiple vehicle breakdowns during the night further contributed to the traffic situation. Although police and army personnel were deployed to manage the traffic, it took time to remove broken-down vehicles, especially on the Jamuna Bridge, using tow trucks.
Additionally, in the morning, a freight truck overturned in the Gharinda area of Tangail Sadar upazila, injuring three people and blocking the highway. As a result, traffic movement remained intermittent throughout the night, leading to major discomfort for passengers. Over a hundred livestock-carrying trucks were also stuck on the highway.
Sharif, the officer-in-charge of the Elenga Highway Police Outpost, confirmed that several buses had broken down on the highway. Joint efforts by the army and police are ongoing to ease the congestion. He expressed hope that the situation would return to normal soon.
