Hamas has released three Israeli hostages in exchange for 183 Palestinian prisoners as part of an internationally brokered ceasefire agreement. The swap, carried out on Saturday, has sparked both relief and concern over the health conditions of the freed captives.
Hamas handed over Israeli hostages Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami, and Or Levy to the Red Cross, which facilitated their return to Israel, where they reunited with their families. However, concerns have been raised over their well-being. Sharabi’s family in the UK described seeing him in an emaciated state, calling the sight distressing.
Meanwhile, celebrations erupted in Ramallah, West Bank, as freed Palestinian prisoners returned home. Representatives stated that many of them require medical attention, though no further details were provided.
Liberty News’ international correspondent states that since the ceasefire began on January 19, a total of 21 Israeli hostages and 566 Palestinian prisoners have been released. The first phase of the ceasefire deal is expected to see 33 Israeli hostages and 1,900 Palestinian prisoners freed. However, Israeli authorities have reported that eight of the 33 hostages have died in captivity.
