Three passengers of a battery-powered auto-rickshaw lost their lives after being struck by a truck while returning home after attending a relative’s funeral in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh.
At least four others have been injured in the accident occurred on Thursday (29 May) afternoon at Pakuritala in Debiganj Municipality, located on the Debiganj-Boda highway.
One person died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries later that night during treatment.
The dead have been identified as Shyamali Rani, 30, wife of Tapas Kumar Roy, was a resident of Nayadighi area in Boda upazila’s Sakoa, Bharosa Rani, 35, from Jotbhubonpara in Pamuli Union of Debiganj Upazila and the wife of Arun Kumar Roy, and Debashree Rani, 7, from Rajarhat Kaliganj in Debiganj Upazila and the daughter of Harendra Nath Roy.
According to police and locals, the victims had been returning home by auto-rickshaw from a funeral in Voulaganj area under Chilahati union in Debiganj, where they had attended the last rites of a deceased relative. When they reached Pakuritala, a truck traveling from Boda to Debiganj collided with their auto-rickshaw, causing the vehicle to crash and throwing all 10 passengers onto the roadside. Seven of the passengers sustained severe injuries.
The injured were later rushed to Debiganj Upazila Health Complex where Shyamali Rani was declared dead by the emergency doctor. The remaining critically injured were later transferred to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Despite efforts to save them, Debashree Rani and Bharosa Rani succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
Prabir Kumar Sarker, the Investigating Officer of Debiganj Police Station, confirmed that police and army personnel rushed to the scene after the accident, but by then, the truck driver had escaped. An Unnatural Death (UD) case has been filed in connection with the accident.
