A three-month ban on fishing and tourism in the Sundarbans will be enforced from June 1 to August 31 to support the breeding season of fish and wildlife and help preserve the forest’s delicate ecosystem.

The decision was announced by the Sundarbans Forest Department, which aims to protect biodiversity and reduce human disturbance during this critical reproductive period.

According to Tanvir Hasan Imran, Officer at the Sharankhola Forest Station, the issuance of entry permits for fishermen, honey collectors, and tourists was suspended on May 24, in preparation for the seasonal restriction.

Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the East Sundarbans Division in Bagerhat, stated, “This annual ban is vital for enhancing the reproductive capacity of aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. During this time, no individuals will be allowed to enter the Sundarbans.”

He added that a proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, seeking food assistance and financial incentives for forest-dependent communities whose livelihoods are affected by the ban. The proposal is currently under consideration.

Meanwhile, Tanzir Hasan, DFO of the West Sundarbans Division in Khulna, confirmed that the government plans to provide support to fishers, honey collectors (Mouals), and wood collectors (Bawalis) during the restriction period.

Each year, this seasonal closure is implemented to allow the forest to recover from human activity, support wildlife breeding, and reduce pollution in the world’s largest mangrove forest—also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
