A Dhaka court has granted one-day remand each for three traders accused of attempting to murder and assault two students from Dhaka University in capital’s New Market area on Monday night.

The accused, Nazrul Islam Milon, Md. Chunnu Mia and Nazmul, were produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza on Tuesday, where police sought a five-day remand for interrogation.

After hearing both sides, the court rejected their bail petitions and approved a one-day remand each.

According to case statement, on the night of May 26, DU students Mohammad Shahedul Islam and Ayezur visited Chandni Chowk Market for shopping. An altercation broke out when shop employees verbally abused a female customer over bargaining. The two students protested the harassment, prompting a group of traders to launch a violent attack on them.

Both students sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The following day, victim Mohammad Shahedul Islam filed a case with New Market Police Station.
