Authorities in Mexico’s central state of Guanajuato have discovered 32 bodies buried in hidden graves on a property in the city of Irapuato, officials confirmed Monday.
According to the Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office, forensic teams have been working at the site in the La Calera community, located on the northern outskirts of Irapuato, since July 30. So far, nearly half of the victims have been identified, and efforts are ongoing to confirm the identities of the rest.
This grim discovery comes less than two months after a deadly mass shooting at a street party in the same city claimed 12 lives.
Guanajuato remains one of Mexico’s most violent regions, plagued by ongoing conflict between rival criminal groups—the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the local Santa Rosa de Lima faction. From January to July alone, the state reported over 1,500 homicides.
The use of clandestine graves is a common tactic among organized crime groups across Mexico. The country currently has nearly 132,000 people listed as missing, according to government data.
