In the genocide case of July–August, 39 accused, including 9 former ministers of the ousted Awami League government, have been produced before the International Crimes Tribunal. They were brought to the tribunal under tight security on Sunday morning.

In seven separate cases of crimes against humanity former members of the fugitive ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet—former Law Minister Anisul Huq, Dipu Moni, Amir Hossain Amu, former Adviser to the Prime Minister on Private Industry and Investment Salman F Rahman, and former State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak—have been brought to the tribunal. Among these 39 are former bureaucrats and police officials.

The hearings of these cases will take place in Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, Chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal.

Earlier, on 18 February, the tribunal ordered the completion of the investigation against a total of 45 people, including these 39.

The other accused are: Faruk Khan, Dipu Moni, Abdur Razzak, Shajahan Khan, Kamal Ahmed Majumder, Golam Dastagir Gazi, Amir Hossain Amu, Kamrul Islam, former advisor Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, JSD President Hasanul Haq Inu, former Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, and former Home Secretary Jahangir Alam.

On 17 December of last year, in two cases filed over the July–August genocide, the tribunal ordered that the investigation against Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and 46 others be completed within two months.

Trial is underway in the International Crimes Tribunal against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other accused as commanders and planners for ordering the shooting and killing of unarmed students and civilians during the anti-discrimination student movement. In an attempt to suppress the student-civilian movement, the Awami League government carried out indiscriminate killings.

Amid the student-civilian movement, on 5 August, the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina’s government came to an end. After that, under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a caretaker government assumed charge of the country and decided to prosecute the July–August genocide.
