Four people, including a teacher, were injured in a police baton charge at Shahbagh intersection in the capital.
On Monday (February 10) around 4 PM, they were brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in injured condition. The injured are: primary school teacher Nazmun Nahar Kona (27), registered teacher Riaz Uddin (42), and pedestrians Seema Akter (23) and Tanzila Akter (23).
Primary school teacher Suraiya, who brought Nazmun Nahar Kona to the hospital, said, “After the High Court canceled our primary teacher finalization, we were holding a sit-in protest at Shahbagh. The police attacked us with baton charges and tear gas, causing injuries.”
Registered teacher Riaz Uddin said, “Even though we passed the registration exam, we have not been appointed to any school yet. While protesting for our appointments at Shahbagh, the police baton-charged us, injuring me.”
Injured Seema and Tanzila said, “We are not involved in the teachers’ registration or primary school recruitment movement. We saw the police beating a woman, and when we tried to intervene, they also beat and injured us.”
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, told Liberty News, “Four people were brought from Shahbagh in injured condition to Dhaka Medical. They are currently receiving treatment in the emergency department.”
