Forty-three Australian Senators and MPs have urged Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to announce a clear election roadmap, ensure justice for victims of political violence, and disband the Rapid Action Battalion.

In a letter send on May 21, forty-three Australian Senators and MPs urged Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to take immediate steps to restore democratic order. Their demands include announcing a time-bound and transparent election roadmap, ensuring justice for victims of the July 2024 uprising, and dismantling the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), citing its involvement in human rights abuses.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the credibility of previous elections in Bangladesh and emphasized the need for an inclusive, fair, and internationally monitored vote. They noted that the global community, including the Australian Bangladeshi diaspora, is closely watching the developments.

Referring to reports from Human Rights Watch and the UN, the letter highlighted widespread political repression, including killings, torture, and enforced disappearances allegedly carried out by RAB. The MPs backed U.S. sanctions on RAB officials and urged the Australian government to consider similar action.

They concluded by calling this a “historic opportunity” for Bangladesh to rebuild democratic institutions and public trust, urging Dr. Yunus to lead decisively and transparently.
