The government has enforced a 58-day ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal starting today, aiming to ensure sustainable marine resources and protect fish breeding cycles.

In a bid to conserve marine biodiversity and support sustainable fishing, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has announced a total ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal for 58 days, from April 15 to June 11. The restriction applies to all types of fishing vessels and fish species across Bangladesh’s maritime waters.

According to a government gazette issued under the Marine Fisheries Rules 2023, this annual ban is intended to facilitate natural fish breeding and replenish marine stocks.

During the restriction period, a joint task force comprising the Coast Guard, Navy, and Fisheries Department will patrol the sea to prevent illegal fishing activities.

Bhola District Fisheries Officer Bishwajit Kumar Deb reported that around 65,000 sea-going fishermen in the district will be affected. To assist them, the government has allocated 78 kilograms of rice per fisherman as compensation.

“This seasonal ban is crucial for the long-term sustainability of our marine resources,” Deb added.

Authorities have urged fishermen to comply strictly with the ban and warned of legal action against violators. The government expects this initiative to enhance fish production, maintain ecological balance, and secure the livelihoods of future generations of coastal communities.
