The report, issued Sunday by Road Safety Foundation’s Executive Director Saidur Rahman, highlights a sharp rise in road casualties nationwide, with motorcycles accounting for the highest proportion of deaths.

Of the total fatalities, 229 people died in 218 motorcycle-related accidents—representing 38.94% of all road deaths. The motorcycle accident rate stood at 36.76%. Among the deceased, 86 were women (14.62%) and 78 were children (13.26%).

Pedestrians also faced significant risk, with 116 deaths reported, comprising 19.72% of the total toll. Meanwhile, 74 drivers and their assistants were killed, making up 12.58% of the casualties.

Regarding accident locations, the foundation’s analysis revealed that 234 crashes (39.46%) occurred on regional roads, followed by 213 on national highways (35.91%), 76 on rural roads (12.81%), 61 on urban roads (10.28%), and nine in other areas (1.51%).

The highest number of fatalities occurred in Dhaka division, with 154 deaths from 173 accidents. Rangpur division recorded the fewest incidents, with 31 crashes and 32 deaths.

The report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive road safety measures, stricter traffic law enforcement, and improved public awareness to curb the ongoing crisis on the nation’s roads.
