700 hospitalised due to dengue

As many as 16 new patients were hospitalized in the Dhaka metropolitan area until Tuesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS. The number of dengue hospitalizations in Bangladesh has increased to 700, with 31 new admissions recorded over the last 24 hours.

The illness’s death toll now stands at seven, with two more fatalities recorded during the same period. In addition, four were hospitalised in the Chattogram Division, two each in the Khulna and Rajshahi division, and seven in the Barishal Division. As many as 275 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country. Of them, 159 are hospitalised in the capital and 116 are outside Dhaka.

There were 575 recorded dengue-related deaths and 101,214 hospitalized patients nationwide in 2024.

In the history of the nation, this is the second-highest number of dengue-related deaths and the third-highest number of hospitalizations. Since 2000, the DGHS has maintained records of hospitalizations and deaths from dengue.

Our staff correspondent reports that since then – a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023. That year also saw the most deaths with 1,705 dead.
