There might be around 700 to 800 secret detention centers, known as ‘Aynaghor,’ across Bangladesh, according to Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
During a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday, Shafiqul Alam revealed that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus visited three secret detention centers in Dhaka, commonly known as ‘Aynaghor.’ The press briefing was organized by the Press Wing following the visit.
The Chief Adviser was accompanied by six other advisers, the head of the Disappearance Commission, five commission members, and eight individuals who had previously been victims of enforced disappearances. Journalists were also present during the visit.
Among the three detention centers inspected, two were operated by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the other by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).
These secret detention centers, known as ‘Aynaghor,’ were allegedly used to hold people who were forcibly disappeared.
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated that every ‘Aynaghor’ in Bangladesh would be identified and investigated. According to the Disappearance Commission and law enforcement agencies, the number of such secret prisons could be between 700 and 800, indicating their presence not only in Dhaka but also in remote areas across the country.
Liberty News’ national correspondent states that deputy Press Secretaries Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad and Apurba Jahangir also spoke at the briefing.
