Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have claimed the lives of 71 more Palestinians within 24 hours, pushing the total death toll to over 52,000 since the escalation began on October 7, 2023.

At least 71 Palestinians were killed in Gaza following relentless Israeli airstrikes over the past 24 hours, Gaza’s Health Ministry confirmed on Monday (April 29). This brings the total number of deaths since October 7, 2023, to a staggering 52,314.

The ministry also reported that 153 injured individuals were transferred to hospitals during the same period, raising the total number of wounded to 117,792. However, authorities warned that many victims remain trapped under rubble and on the streets, as ongoing attacks and blockades hinder rescue efforts. Volunteers attempting to reach the victims are also facing attacks, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Since Israel resumed its aggressive offensive on Gaza on March 18, over 2,222 Palestinians have been killed and more than 5,700 wounded, according to official figures.

Meanwhile, Palestinian group Hamas has agreed to a proposal offering a five-year truce in exchange for the release of all hostages. An AFP report on Saturday (April 26) cited an anonymous Hamas official who confirmed the group’s willingness to reach a comprehensive deal. A Hamas delegation was scheduled to meet mediators in Cairo for further negotiations.

Previously, Israel had proposed a 45-day ceasefire tied to the release of 10 living hostages, which Hamas rejected on April 17, maintaining its demand for a full and lasting resolution rather than a temporary truce.
