The interim government has cancelled the observance of 8 August as ‘New Bangladesh Day’, just days after it was initially declared. The decision was taken on Sunday during a meeting of the Advisory Council, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, who confirmed the update on his verified Facebook page.
Instead, the government has decided to officially observe 16 July as Shaheed Day and 5 August as Uprising Day, marking significant events in recent national history.
The 8 August date had earlier been declared to commemorate the formation of the interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, following the fall of the previous regime on 7 August through a mass student and public uprising.
Following the earlier announcement, government departments and agencies were instructed to observe the day annually, with its inclusion as a category B national observance. The reversal signals a shift in focus towards memorializing the victims and mass movement leaders of the uprising rather than the formation of the new administration.
