A section of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Telangana, India, trapping at least eight workers inside. The incident occurred on Saturday, February 22, when several workers were attempting to seal a hole in the tunnel behind the Srisailam Dam. During this time, the dam collapsed. This information was reported by India’s NDTV News on Sunday, February 23.
The report states that around 50 workers were inside the tunnel at the time of the incident for leakage repairs. While the others were able to safely escape, eight workers remain trapped inside the tunnel.
Among those trapped, there are two engineers, two technical workers, four laborers. A senior official stated that at least 10 meters of the tunnel has collapsed, with mud spread across an area of at least 200 meters.
Collector B. Santosh stated that no contact has been made with the trapped workers. The internal measures taken to rescue them have failed. The air entry chamber and conveyor belt have all been destroyed.
The Chief Minister, Revant Reddy, has expressed his condolences over the incident. Agriculture Minister N. Uttam Kumar and other officials have rushed to the site.
