Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved the extension of the ceasefire in Gaza for six more weeks, a decision that coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the Jewish Passover festival.

The ceasefire, which was set to end on March 1, has been extended following a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Wittkopf. Under the terms of this extension, half of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza will be released on the first day, including both the dead and the alive.

Liberty News’ international correspondent states that the Palestinian liberation group Hamas, based in Gaza, has not commented on Israel’s latest move. However, Hamas has made it clear that they will not agree to any extension of the first phase of the ceasefire without guarantees for the second phase. The initial 42-day ceasefire started on January 19.
