The Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) has been in a dilapidated state for a long time, with employees frequently seen protesting due to unpaid salaries. In an effort to revitalize the BFDC, the rental fees for shooting floors and equipment have recently been reduced. Now, the focus is on recovering the corporation’s outstanding dues.
At a press conference yesterday, newly appointed Managing Director Masuma Rahman Tani announced that legal measures are being taken to recover the owed money.
Masuma Rahman Tani stated, “BFDC is owed money by many entities. There are several production companies that have enormous amounts of money, yet they have had large-scale work done on credit from BFDC without paying. Despite repeated letters, nothing has been done. Millions of Taka are owed, while the people here are not getting their salaries. We will take legal action. Since I am new here, I expect everyone to support me. I have told everyone to not just exchange letters, but to personally reach out on behalf of BFDC. First, we will politely request the dues, and if that doesn’t work, we will resort to legal action.”
Masuma Rahman Tani joined as the Managing Director of the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) on February 23. On the same day, the “Equal Rights for Film Interests Preservation Committee” held a protest rally and press conference in front of BFDC’s main gate, demanding her removal. Despite the protests, Tani remains focused on the future of BFDC.
She stated, “BFDC is not just a job or responsibility for me; it’s a place I love. When passion aligns with responsibility, the work takes on a whole new dimension. Those who came before me had to face various pressures from the government at the time. However, this government is focused on the country’s reforms. I will make every effort to reform BFDC during this opportunity.”
Regarding her plans for BFDC, Tani shared, “Some work has already begun. The rental fees for the floors have been reduced, which has increased the number of shoots. Also, filmmakers used to fear shooting here due to the numerous regulations. We are addressing those issues. There are still many areas for improvement.”
