Bangladesh cricket’s popular face Mahmudullah Riyad has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades. The former captain confirmed his decision through a heartfelt message on social media on Wednesday.
On his farewell post on his verified Facebook page, Mahmudullah expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and loyal supporters.
“All praise belongs to the Almighty. I have decided to retire from international cricket. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all my teammates, coaches, and especially my fans who have supported me throughout my journey,” he wrote.
The veteran all-rounder also acknowledged the unwavering support of his family, particularly his parents, in-laws, and elder brother, Emdad Ullah, whom he credited as his mentor and coach since childhood.
Reflecting on his journey, Mahmudullah extended his best wishes to the Bangladesh national team.
“Lastly, I want to thank my wife and children, who stood by me during tough times. I know Riyad in red and green will be missed. Not everything ends perfectly, but you say ‘yes’ and move forward. Peace, Alhamdulillah. Wishing my team and Bangladesh cricket the very best,” he added.
Liberty News’ sports correspondent states that Mahmudullah made his international debut in July 2007 in an ODI against Sri Lanka. His final appearance for Bangladesh came last month in the ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand.
His departure marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and memorable performances in Bangladesh cricket.
