Amid concerns over a sudden 37% tariff on Bangladeshi products, BGMEA Administrator Md. Anwar Hossain has issued an open letter to US buyers, brands, retailers, and their representatives, urging collaboration to overcome the challenge.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Monday released an open letter addressing American buyers and stakeholders, expressing deep concern over the recently imposed 37% countervailing duty on Bangladeshi apparel exports to the US
In the letter, BGMEA Administrator Md. Anwar Hossain called for suggestions and support from buyers to jointly navigate the crisis, emphasizing the importance of cooperation. He highlighted that the United States is the single largest market for Bangladeshi garments, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the country’s total apparel exports.
The letter noted that the new tariff has created uncertainty not only for Bangladeshi exporters but also for American buyers, retailers, and brand companies who now face disruptions in cost structure, supply chains, and long-term planning.
“This counter-tariff has introduced an unexpected and challenging situation for both countries,” the letter stated. It also mentioned that many global brands have reached out to their partners in Bangladesh, discussing ways to manage the impact. However, BGMEA urged US partners not to place additional burdens on suppliers during this time and instead show patience and support.
Concluding the letter, BGMEA emphasized the longstanding partnership between US buyers and the Bangladeshi apparel sector in building a socially responsible and sustainable industry. It expressed confidence that through mutual effort, the current crisis can be effectively resolved.
