Zillur Rahman, Khulna: An alleged attempt to grab a shrimp farm in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna has escalated into a smear campaign targeting the acting chairman of Laskar Union Parishad, Jahangir Alam Sana.
According to Jahangir Alam, a group with vested interests has been spreading false information linking him to political affiliations in an effort to tarnish his reputation after failing to seize control of the shrimp enclosure.
The farm in question, spanning approximately 60 bighas, is located in the Dhemshakhali mouza of Laskar union. It is currently managed by Pappu, son of Alomgir Sana of Kharia village and nephew of the acting chairman. Previously, the farm was operated by Jahangir’s father, Abu Siddique Sana. Of the total area, about 50 bighas are reportedly owned by the Sana family, while a few plots are leased from others.
A portion of this leased land is being claimed by Rupban Bibi and her son Ruhul Amin Sana, who hail from the same area. In 2022, Ruhul Amin filed a case (CR Case No. 530/2022) with the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court in Paikgachha, accusing Abu Siddique and five others over alleged unpaid lease money for 37 acres of land. The court later dismissed the case, citing lack of evidence sufficient for framing charges.
On Wednesday, the claimant’s group reportedly attempted to take control of the farm but failed due to local resistance. The following day, they filed a complaint with the police against acting chairman Jahangir Alam. Subsequently, several online news portals and social media posts began circulating allegations against him, accusing him of political favoritism and mismanagement.
In response, Jahangir Alam said, “This is a baseless smear campaign. Neither I nor my family have ever been involved with the Awami League or any political party. In fact, during my student life, I was affiliated with the BNP’s student wing.”
He further added, “These individuals are envious of my growing popularity and my ability to successfully run the Union Parishad. Since they failed to grab the land legally or forcefully, they are now trying to defame me by linking me to political agendas.”
The acting chairman has strongly condemned the campaign and urged the authorities to take steps to prevent further misinformation.
