Interpol has issued a red notice against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, a high-profile figure during the Awami League government, following corruption allegations and a court directive in Bangladesh.
Interpol has officially issued a red notice for former IGP Benazir Ahmed, who is currently absconding along with his family, according to multiple sources at the Bangladesh Police Headquarters. The notice was issued on April 10 based on a court order following a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The police’s National Central Bureau (NCB) forwarded the application to Interpol soon after receiving the court directive.
The confirmation came from AIG (Media & Public Relations) Enamul Haque Sagar, who informed the press on Tuesday. Although the notice has not yet appeared on Interpol’s public website, Bangladesh Police has received an official email confirmation regarding its issuance.
A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) ranked officer stated that Benazir Ahmed’s current whereabouts remain unknown. However, the red notice is expected to significantly assist in identifying his location and facilitating extradition efforts.
In a related development, red notice applications have also been submitted against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 senior leaders of the Awami League. Interpol has reportedly held three stages of communication, including a virtual meeting, concerning these requests.
The developments mark a dramatic turn in the ongoing anti-corruption drive, raising the stakes in Bangladesh’s political and legal landscape.
