Angered by a recent machete attack on BNP and transport association leaders, demonstrators blocked the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway in Tongi on Sunday, demanding immediate arrests of the alleged assailants.

Leaders of the Gazipur District Transport Contractor Owners’ Association staged a demonstration on Sunday morning, blocking the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway in the Mill Gate area of Tongi. The protest was sparked by an attack allegedly carried out by pro-Awami League activists from the Truck Workers’ Union after they were confronted over extortion activities.

The demonstrators claimed that seven people—including leaders from both the BNP and the transport contractors’ association—were seriously injured in the early Saturday morning attack with sharp weapons. The victims had reportedly opposed extortion by a faction of the ruling party-backed truck union.

During the protest, the agitated leaders demanded the arrest of truck and covered van union leaders Abdur Rashid Bhuiyan, Shamsul Haque Rana, Azad Hossain, as well as others allegedly involved in the assault. They issued a 24-hour ultimatum and warned that failure to act would lead to a larger movement that could paralyze Gazipur.

A protest rally followed the roadblock, where former councilor Abul Hashem, Haji Mohammad Selim, Ward 55 BNP President Haji Zahirul Islam, Haji Dulal Mia, Jamal Uddin, and Al-Amin addressed the crowd.

The incident highlights growing political tensions in the area, as well as rising concerns over unchecked extortion and violence allegedly linked to ruling party affiliates.
