Injured July Movement protesters block Shahbagh

Injured members of the July Movement continued their sit-in protest at Shahbagh intersection on Sunday, demanding the permanent ban of the Awami League as a political party and the immediate publication of the July Charter.

Protesters began gathering at Shahbagh on Saturday night and remained there overnight. By Sunday noon, they had set up barricades at all four entry points to the intersection, halting traffic and causing major disruptions. Vehicles were being diverted through alternate routes such as Farmgate and Science Lab via Matsya Bhaban and Hare Road.

One protester, Biplob, who had recently been discharged from Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, expressed his frustration: “The government accepted one of our demands but is delaying the other. They couldn’t deliver the July Charter in nine months—how will they do it in 30 days? We will not leave until all demands are met.”

The demonstrators insist that the Awami League must be permanently banned and that full medical support be provided for those injured during the July protests.

According to the protesters, they responded to a call by Hasnat Abdullah to assemble at Shahbagh. While other political groups left the scene overnight, the injured protestors remained in place, refusing to leave without a resolution.

In response to the protests, the interim government convened an emergency meeting Saturday night. The council of advisers declared a temporary ban on all political activities by the Awami League, pending the outcome of tribunal proceedings. Additionally, the council approved an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act, enabling the tribunal to try political parties as collective entities.
