Former MP from Manikganj-2 and renowned folk singer Momtaz Begum was arrested late Monday night by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from a residence in Dhanmondi in connection with a murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch apprehended the ex-parliamentarian from behind Star Kabab in Dhanmondi around 11:45 PM. Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrest.

Momtaz, a long-time figure in the Awami League and president of the Singair Upazila Awami League unit, contested the 12th national elections as the AL candidate for Manikganj-2 but lost to party rebel Dewan Zahid Ahmed Tulu. Since her electoral defeat, she had become largely inactive in local politics and had been rarely seen in her constituency.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 after a mass student-led movement, Momtaz reportedly went into hiding.

DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam stated that multiple cases, including a murder case, have been filed against her. She has been taken to the DB office for interrogation.

Momtaz Begum, widely known for her contributions to Bangladeshi folk music, served multiple terms as a lawmaker from Manikganj-2, including a stint as an MP from a reserved seat.
