A Dhaka court has ordered the freezing of eight additional bank accounts belonging to former BGB Director General (DG) retired Major General Md. Safinul Islam and his wife, Soma Islam, amid an ongoing graft investigation.
Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order on Monday following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed ACC public relations officer Akhtarul Islam.
The ACC, represented by Deputy Director Monirul Islam, informed the court that it is investigating allegations that Safinul and his wife amassed illegal wealth through abuse of power and corruption. During the probe, several bank accounts under their names were discovered, which were allegedly being used to transfer or hide funds. To prevent potential embezzlement, the ACC sought the freezing of these accounts.
Earlier, on April 23, the same court ordered a freeze on 56 bank accounts belonging to Safinul, Soma Islam, and their son Samin Islam. Those accounts reportedly contain Tk 10.80 crore.
Additionally, on March 13, the court issued a travel ban on Safinul and his wife. The ACC questioned the couple on May 9 as part of its ongoing investigation into their allegedly undisclosed wealth.
