The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday urged interim government chief Prof Muhammad Yunus to immediately announce the national election schedule, warning that continued delays are intensifying political instability across the country.

Speaking at a protest rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club, BNP leader and former opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque criticized the lack of electoral clarity, accusing the interim leadership of prolonging unrest and uncertainty.

“There appears to be a wave of unrest sweeping the country. Who are the culprits behind this instability? Who is attempting to delay the election? We wish to know these things from a great person like you, Dr Yunus,” Farroque said at the rally, organized by Aparajeyo Bangladesh under the slogan, “Resist the Conspiracy to Foil the National Election – Rise, the People of the Country.”

Farroque, also a member of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council, said the absence of a roadmap is preventing opposition parties from transitioning from protest to constructive political engagement. “Had you provided a clear election roadmap, those who braved persecution under Sheikh Hasina’s rule could now be preparing for polls instead of protesting,” he added.

Directly addressing Prof Yunus, he cautioned, “If this instability is of your making, then let it be known that the BNP will never accept responsibility for it.”

Farroque also expressed concern over media speculation regarding Prof Yunus’s potential resignation. “If a respected figure like you is forced to depart in disgrace, it will hurt us deeply,” he said.

Calling for a credible election, Farroque urged Prof Yunus to “write his name in history in golden letters,” referencing former president Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed’s role in conducting a peaceful election. “Let people vote freely in daylight without fear,” he added.

The BNP leader also demanded the removal of controversial advisory council members, urging Prof Yunus to take action against Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Mahfuj Alam, and Khalilur Rahman to preserve public confidence.

Cautioning against reforms that could compromise national interests, he warned, “Reforms must not pave the way to Myanmar, nor should Chattogram Port fall into the hands of others.”

Farroque concluded with a firm call to action: “Prof Yunus himself must announce the election schedule within the next few days to restore calm and avoid further turmoil.”
