Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government faces a serious threat of collapse amid internal tensions within his ruling coalition. A preliminary vote to dissolve the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, may take place on Wednesday (June 11), raising the possibility of early elections.

The crisis stems from a long-standing dispute over whether ultra-Orthodox Jewish seminary students should be subject to mandatory military service. With Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza demanding more troops, calls for all sectors of society to contribute have intensified.

Some ultra-Orthodox parties in Netanyahu’s coalition are demanding exemptions for their students, while other lawmakers are pushing to end such privileges altogether. The deadlock has escalated into a political standoff, with religious parties threatening to join the opposition in voting to dissolve the parliament.

If the vote passes, the Knesset must go through three additional steps before being officially dissolved, paving the way for snap elections.

Opposition leader Merav Michaeli of the Israeli Labor Party stated, “Now more than ever, replacing Netanyahu’s dangerous and destructive government is essential. The war in Gaza must end, the hostages must return, and Israel must be rebuilt.”

Meanwhile, Netanyahu is in urgent talks with coalition partners to save his government from collapse.
