Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for local government elections to be held before the next national parliamentary polls, the party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer, Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, said on Thursday.
Speaking at an event in Cumilla’s Debidwar Upazila Parishad auditorium, Taher stated that the party is open to national elections taking place between December and April — but only if local polls are held first.
Taher also addressed proposed political reforms, including imposing a two-term limit on the office of the prime minister. “Most political parties support this, except the BNP,” he claimed, adding that a final decision on the issue will be discussed at Sunday’s Consensus Commission meeting.
Regarding Article 70 of the constitution, which restricts MPs from dissenting against their party, Jamaat proposed an amendment allowing dissent — except during votes on constitutional amendments, budgets, and no-confidence motions.
Taher noted improved conditions for political activity, saying Jamaat is now able to hold public meetings without obstruction. “Before 5 August, we were being arrested. Now police salute our leaders,” he claimed.
At the event, Jamaat announced its candidates for both national and local elections. Md Saiful Islam Shahid was nominated for the Debidwar (Cumilla-4) seat, while Lokman Hakim was selected as the mayoral candidate for Debidwar Municipality.
