A student of Dhaka University (DU) allegedly died by suicide early Monday after jumping from the rooftop of a dormitory building.

The deceased, identified as Sanju Baraik, was a resident of Jagannath Hall and a student of the Anthropology Department under the 2020–21 academic session. He was from Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj district.

Hall Provost Debashish Pal said Sanju entered the dormitory around 4:01am through the east gate and was seen on CCTV taking the lift to the roof of Rabindra Bhavan. At approximately 5:30am, he jumped towards the road on the west side of the building near the pond.

Security guards rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Quoting his roommates, the provost mentioned that Sanju had been emotionally distressed over a personal relationship and had not stayed in the hall for the past two days.

Officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, Khalid Munsur, said the incident appears to be a suicide, but a full investigation is underway. CCTV footage is being reviewed as part of the process.

Before the incident, Sanju reportedly posted a message on Facebook expressing regret over his actions, apologizing to those he may have hurt, and accepting full responsibility.

Police said they are continuing inquiries to determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
