In a heartwarming gesture, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced it will build a new home for national women’s footballer Ritu Porna Chakma.
The decision was confirmed after a BCB board meeting on Saturday, with Media Committee Chairman and Director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu stating, “BCB will build a house for national women’s team footballer Rituporna Chakma.”
Ritu Porna, whose family home in remote Rangamati is in a dilapidated state, has been the sole breadwinner for her household since the death of her father and brother. Her mother is unwell, adding further to the financial strain.
Despite these hardships, Ritu Porna has been instrumental in Bangladesh’s recent football success — scoring in the 2024 SAFF Championship final and netting twice last month against Myanmar to secure Bangladesh’s first-ever AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualification.
The news came as a surprise to the footballer, who learned about it unexpectedly on Saturday night. “I was very surprised when I heard the news. I am grateful to BCB and everyone involved, including the president, for standing by me in this way,” she said.
Ritu Porna’s current home in the remote village of Maghachhari, Rangamati, is difficult to access. A previous government had allotted her a 12-decimal plot of land in Ghagra Union after the SAFF triumph, but the registration process has been pending for over three years. She has appealed for the matter to be resolved swiftly so BCB can build her home there instead.
“The place we live now is very far inside, which causes travel problems for my family. If BCB can build the house on the land I received, it will be very good for us. I hope the land registration issue is settled soon,” Ritu Porna urged.
