After a three-year pause, the National Football Championship is making a comeback in 2025, rekindling memories of its golden era in the 1980s and 1990s. The last edition was held in 2021, and the new Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) committee has now revived the competition.

At the first meeting of the organizing committee, chaired by BFF Vice President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, it was announced that the tournament will begin on August 30, with the official draw scheduled for August 25. The championship will run for three months on a home-and-away format. Alongside senior district-level contests, under-17 and women’s competitions will also be staged midway through the event.

An eight-member advisory panel has been formed, featuring BFF President, Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya, and senior officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council.

In line with ministry directives, this year’s tournament will feature only district teams. Jointly organized by the BFF and the National Sports Council, the championship will honor the memory of eight martyrs—Mahfuzur Rahman Mughdho, Nafisa Hossain Marwa, Mohammad Wasim Akram, Sakib Anzum, Abu Saeed Mia, Sheikh Md. Sakib Raihan, Abdullah Al Bahar, and Golam Nafiz—with zones named after them.

A total of 112 matches will be played. In the opening stage, home-and-away ties will go to tiebreakers if necessary, with 32 teams progressing to the second round, which will also follow a home-and-away format.
