Jaker points to batting lapses as key reason for defeat

Bangladesh followed up their strong start in the Asia Cup, where they beat Hong Kong by seven wickets, with a disappointing performance against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on . The former champions launched their campaign with a comfortable six-wicket win, chasing down Bangladesh’s modest total.

The batting collapse was at the heart of the defeat, as skipper Litton Das’s side struggled early on. An unbeaten 86-run stand between Jaker Ali Anik and Shamim Hossain eventually lifted the score to 139, but Sri Lanka reached the target easily, with 32 balls to spare.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Jaker Ali admitted that Bangladesh’s batting unit had underperformed, despite his own partnership with Shamim. He stressed that the early collapse in the power play cost them the chance to post a competitive score.

“We didn’t do well in the batting unit. Losing so many wickets in the power play makes it difficult to do well on such pitches. A score of 160-170 is considered a fighting score, but we failed to reach it. A good partnership between me and Patwari does not mean we are too good; it was a poor performance by the whole team, so the whole team must play well,” the batsman said.

Jaker was also asked about Bangladesh’s repeated decision to bowl first after winning the toss, both in recent home series and in the Asia Cup opener against Hong Kong. He clarified that practice routines do not necessarily dictate batting or bowling choices and pointed instead to deeper issues.

“We always practice like that; batting first or last doesn’t really matter. For me, we lack a proper plan and timing. It would have been better if we had paid more attention to these two things.” Jaker concluded.
