National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organizer (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam has said that his party must get the electoral symbol ‘Shapla’ (water lily), and there is no alternative.

Otherwise, he warned, they would see how elections are conducted and how others dream of gaining power.

He made the remarks in a post from his verified Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon.

Sarjis wrote, “The Election Commission secretary has said that since ‘Shapla’ is not on the list of symbols, the NCP cannot be allotted this symbol. That means there is no legal barrier, only that it is missing from the list. Therefore, they cannot give NCP the ‘Shapla’ symbol.”

He alleged that NCP had made it clear during its first registration application that it wanted the Shapla symbol. Yet, despite this, the symbol has not been added to the list. “So, whose responsibility was it to include ‘Shapla’ in the list? Have they been sitting idle at the Election Commission all this time watching a drama? Or have they been following instructions from some other institution, party or agency while sitting in an independent body?” he questioned.

Issuing a warning, Sarjis further said, “All kinds of hypocrisy will be resisted politically. Since there is no legal barrier, NCP’s symbol must be ‘Shapla’. There is no other option.”
