Bangladesh kicked off their Asia Cup Super Four campaign with a thrilling three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, keeping their hopes of reaching the final alive. Ahead of their second match against India on Wednesday, coach Phil Simmons reflected on the emotional yet controlled celebrations following the landmark win.
The coach’s image, captured on social media and TV screens, went viral as he restrained his emotions despite the team’s emphatic performance. Speaking at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, Simmons said, “I try to control my emotions as much as possible. We didn’t come here just to beat Sri Lanka; we came to win the tournament. Until we are either knocked out or win the tournament, I won’t fully express my emotions because I have to keep everyone in the dressing room focused and disciplined.”
When asked if Bangladesh could now be considered strong contenders for the final, Simmons remained cautious.
“There are still no favorites. We have two matches ahead, both against strong teams. We have to play well. Right now, I am only thinking about the match against India on Wednesday night. After that, we will focus on Pakistan. Only then will we think about the final. At the moment, all our attention is on India,” he added.
Bangladesh will face Pakistan the day after their clash with India. Addressing the packed schedule, Simmons admitted the challenge, “Playing back-to-back T20s is extremely difficult, even if it were one-day matches. So, it’s not an easy situation. But we are prepared; we have trained really hard. I think the boys are fit enough to handle consecutive matches. Still, I don’t consider it fair for any team to play back-to-back T20s. It is much tougher than people realize.”
With focus and fitness at the forefront, Bangladesh aim to carry their momentum into the remaining Super Fours matches and keep their Asia Cup dreams alive.
