Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has assured that there are no security threats surrounding the immersion of Durga idols in the capital.
He said additional police forces and intelligence personnel have already been deployed to ensure smooth celebrations.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday afternoon after inspecting security arrangements at the Banani Puja Mandap, the DMP Commissioner said, “Extra security measures have been taken at all immersion points. A large number of police personnel and intelligence members are on duty, and so far, there are no concerns that may disrupt security.”
He also urged caution during the immersion process, advising devotees not to board boats without knowing how to swim and to wear life jackets even if they can swim, to avoid accidents.
Highlighting that Durga Puja is being celebrated at 254 mandaps across Dhaka, Sajjat Ali said, “Today is Navami and tomorrow is the immersion. No untoward incidents have been reported so far. We have been preparing for about a month to ensure the celebrations proceed in a joyous and festive environment.”
He added that coordination meetings have been held with the home ministry, Police Headquarters, and DMP Headquarters regarding security preparations.
The Commissioner also emphasised maintaining communal harmony, saying, “For hundreds of years, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians have lived together in this country as brothers and sisters. It is our duty to ensure this harmony is preserved for future generations.”
Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam and other senior DMP officials were present during the inspection.
