The Election Commission (EC) is taking “arbitrary decisions”, alleged Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator for the southern region of the National Citizen Party (NCP).
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the EC’s Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Hasnat accused the Commission of lacking independence.
“Decisions are not made in Agargaon. The EC’s remote control is in someone else’s hands. They cannot make any decisions on their own,” he said.
Hasnat further criticised the Commission’s stance on his party’s election symbol, the ‘Shapla’ (water lily).
“They have failed to provide any legal explanation for denying us the Shapla symbol. There is no alternative to Shapla for us,” he added.
The NCP has been pressing the EC to allocate the ‘Shapla’ as its electoral symbol, claiming it represents the party’s political identity. The Commission is yet to announce its final decision.
