BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman will return to Bangladesh “very soon,” urging supporters to prepare for a nationwide show of strength when he arrives.

“Our leader will very soon be among us. The day he steps onto Bangladeshi soil, the entire country should shake. We want to reshape the face of Bangladesh on that day,” he said.

He made the remarks on Thursday morning at the Krishibid Institute Bangladesh (KIB) in Dhaka while inaugurating the BNP’s Desh Gorar Porikolpona (nation-building plan) programme.

Mirza Fakhrul said the election schedule will be announced today, adding that the BNP, with public support, aims to form “a truly representative parliament” that will “take Bangladesh toward a new horizon” under Tarique Rahman’s leadership.

The BNP leader expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as a lack of enthusiasm among activists.

“I am not seeing the spontaneity among you today. You fought for the last 15 years. Before that, you fought dictatorships. This election is the most important, the toughest battle. You must move forward with strong resolve,” he said.

Calling the new policy guidelines announced by Tarique Rahman “innovative in the context of Bangladeshi politics,” Fakhrul said this election would not resemble those held “under the Awami League era.”

“This will be a fully neutral election. To win, you must earn the people’s support, win their hearts, bring them to polling centres and convince them to vote for you,” he added.

Mirza Fakhrul urged party members to move past nomination grievances.

“Who got nomination or who didn’t — this is not the time to think about that. The BNP is a forward-looking party. It has always presented progressive ideas before the nation,” he said.

He stressed that the BNP is prepared to lead the nation again

“This fight is for victory. We must win fully so we can move Bangladesh forward. Many obstacles will come, many campaigns are being run against us. We want to rise above all that and stand tall,” he noted.

He argued that the BNP has never been defeated in spirit.

“The BNP is the people’s party, the party of the Liberation War, the party of democratic struggle. Keep these in your minds. Your strength will come from unity and the determination to move forward,” he said.

Referring to comments undermining the 1971 generation, Fakhrul said, “We hear someone saying the generation of ’71 is the worst generation. We must stay alert. Some may try to mislead us by using religion or spreading confusion from behind the scenes. Our fight is to resist such forces and take the country forward.”
